Infographic: Pet ownership in the US Facts

An infographic by VetDepot.com displays that despite the rocky economy, pet ownership has reached an all-time high in the United States. According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association, almost 73 million homes in the U.S. own at least one pet, which means almost two-thirds of American households are proud owners! Dogs and cats are the most popular pets to own, making up almost 75% of pet owning American households. There are about 46 million dogs and almost 39 million cats in American homes. Fish are third on the pet popularity list with 12.6 million, followed by birds with 5.7 million, small mammals with 5 million, reptiles and amphibians with 4.6 million and horses with 2.4 million. The number of pet owning households in the U.S. is up 2.1% from the APPA’s previous pet ownership survey.

The infographic also displays that the majority of dogs and cats in American homes have been spayed or neutered.
