Youngest self-made billionaire thanks to Spanx

The inventor of Spanx bodyshaping underwear has been named the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire.

Sara Blakely, 41, was given the honour in the 25th annual rich list from Forbes magazine, which credited her with “re-inventing the girdle”.

Her simple idea of underwear to banish bulges by shaping and controlling the figure was embraced by women worldwide.

Celebrity customers include Gwyneth Paltrow, Sienna Miller, Dannii Minogue and Emily Blunt, who admit they have worn Spanx on the red carpet.

The entrepreneur’s company is valued on Wall Street at $1billion (about R7.5bn). As she owns 100 percent and has no debt, she made the roll of global billionaires, coming in 1 153rd on the list of 1 226.
